have you seen sicko?

so, how did i go more than a week without writing anything!? especially after such a fun post where so many people popped by to say hi. :) this week was insane. work was insane. and then there was something going on every night, it seemed. BUT i did go to yoga TWICE! i'm giving myself a little pat on the back right now and tooting my own little horn and pinning a rose on my nose, and all that fun stuff... but i really am proud of myself.

anyway...

what i really want to talk about is the documentary "sicko", by michael moore. i just watched it last night. i'm not sure how many people have seen it... but i'm curious, if you HAVE seen it, what you thought? i'm not really eager to start some kind of war for or against universal healthcare on my blog (though, i do love a good debate), but i thought the documentary was really really interesting, and i want to talk to people about it. so, i want to know if any of you have seen it. anyone? anyone? and if you have.... what did you think? did it effect the way you thought about universal healthcare? if you're for it, how come? if you're against it, why?

and how many of you are seriously considering a move to france after watching it?

My brother served his mission in France. His comments are that he fears it ever coming to the US. His mission companion had an accident with his arm and barbed wire - they didn't check to see that an artery was severed and he almost bled to death. His other companion who broke his finger ended up getting his French Healthcare fixed in Belgium - and I'll spare you those gruesome details.

Personally we need to do something about rising healthcare costs but socializing our medicine causes more problems than it fixes. We pay an astronomical amount to self-insure our family and I am grateful that Rich's new job comes with great benefits.

i have mixed feeling about michael moore. i like that he asks hard questions and gets the public asking them as well. but he's openly biased and his findings are often misleading.

that said - healthcare here sucks. i don't know how to fix it, but i do know that everyone should have it. i also know that insurance companies can bite me so something needs to happen there, too. i generally feel protected by my local law enforcement, which is a "free" service, but i feel like my health insurance, which i pay a TON for, is just waiting for a chance to deny a claim.

and french bread is tasty ... but i like driving on the right side.

uhh, i'm an idiot. despite a movie i once saw as a child, apparently france drives on the right.

in which case, i'm packing!

I haven’t seen Sicko (although the title makes me laugh every time), but I know a girl that was living in England when she had her baby. She and her British husband were doing the whole socialized healthcare thing, and while there were things she really liked about it, she was frustrated that while she was in labor they wouldn’t give her an epidural. She kept asking (begging) for it, but the nurse kept talking her out of it saying she didn’t need it. Obviously nobody “needs” an epidural, but she was in severe pain (throw her a freaking bone) and she was sure the hospital didn’t want to give her one because it would be really expensive for them.

So at times like that, I say God bless America.
